Look who is in the January issue of Jewelers Circular Keystone Magazine!

As Croghan’s Jewel Box enters our 100th year and 6th generation of being a family owned business, not much has changed since the store was first established in the early 1900s. When the store first opened it was the enclosed porch of a 1794 Charleston home where bench jeweler/ hand-engraver William Joseph Croghan worked. In the 1930s, William’s daughter, Mary, turned Croghan’s into a retail store. And six decades later, her daughter Mariana moved the business off the porch and into the house. “Very little changed in 80 years,” says Mariana, who now runs Croghan’s with her sister, Rhett. “We didn’t have a cash register until 1999.” Now, her daughter Kathleen is poised to join Croghan’s 100-year tradition. “You have to get young blood in the store to revitalize things,” says Mariana.

Mariana: Part of reaching this milestone is our family tradition of giving back. My mother taught us the lesson from a very early age. She was always very involved in local museums, the symphony, and held board positions on many charities. As a business owner, when you have the same goals as the community, people trust you.

Rhett: Our grandmother and grandfather used to close the store at lunch for “2 o’clock dinner,” a Charleston tradition. They’d take whoever was in the store—customers, employees, or friends—and bring them to their home for a meal that my grandmother cooked. This was the start of b

uilding relationships with people, generation after generation. But as much as we enjoy having 1,600 friends on Facebook, we can’t serve them all dinner.

Kathleen: We welcome customers into our family by taking an interest in their lives. We also buy jewelry with the customers’ tastes in mind, be it estate or antique jewelry from special sales or new collections from top designers sourced at major trade shows.

Congrats to Katy and Jeff! Their wedding was recently mentioned on Martha Stewart’s wedding blog, The Bride’s Guide, and we were thrilled to be a small part of their special day. The couple cut their wedding cake using a sterling silver knife from our store. It was engraved with the insignia used throughout their stationery suite.

It’s engagement season, and we’re betting a lot of you have some great stories! I just got wind of one that I couldn’t resist sharing.

It begins with Reagan, who works at Kristin Newman Designs (the planning and event design company that helped create Katy and Jeff’s wedding from our new winter issue). Reagan was in D.C. over Christmas to see her boyfriend, Grant, who is commissioned in the Marines.

The couple was walking under the National Christmas Tree when a girl walked by with a golden retriever puppy. Reagan knew she was getting a puppy from Grant for Christmas, but when she stopped to pet the puppy she didn’t realize it was actually the puppy she’d be getting. The sweet thing had a tag on it’s collar etched with the words “will you marry me.” She said yes!

Oh, that stunner on her finger? A gem from Croghan’s Jewel Box, in Charleston, where Reagan lives. Grant picked it out in August, after asking Reagan’s father for her hand in July.

And the pup? Her name’s Penny!

Welcome to Our Brand New Website! After months of planning we hope that we are bringing you a clean, user friendly site that will enhance your shopping experience at Croghan’s Jewel Box. We invite you to browse and enjoy the photographs of over a hundred pieces of our favorite jewels and gifts.

Check back frequently as we will be adding new items as often as we possibly can. We will eventually add a shopping bag but for the moment we want our customers to know that we cherish the human contact of a phone call or at least an email. We know we would not be here without the loyalty of 4 generations of customers. We like hearing your voice, shaking your hand and looking you in the eye as we hand you your purchase.
